Remion’s AI prowess and experience secure win at Industryhack with innovation for smart laser welding
A Remion team got to broadly apply its tech skills on a co-creation project run by Industryhack. The host company, Coherent, was seeking solutions to boost the efficiency of its welding process. The manufacturer of laser and photonics solutions was looking in this challenge contest for a partner to develop a laser welding system of the future which would use sensor data and artificial intelligence (AI).
Remion secured its first Industryhack win despite stiff competition. It was one of four Finnish AI specialists chosen to take part in the contest, which took place over three days at the start of June.
Miika Valtonen, CTO at Remion, is delighted with Remion’s win at the challenge contest. There were high expectations of the contest, and the mood in advance of it was positive.
– The Coherent challenge contest focused on construction of a smart laser ecosystem, which is what our skills and solutions are highly suited for.
Coherent aims to generate added value for its clients through an even more precise and optimized welding process.
CTO Miika Valtonen was Remion’s industryhack team leader.
Remion’s three-person contest team built on diverse knowhow
– Our CEO, Jukka, has business insight into how to build an entire solution based on the customer’s need. Our software engineer, Petri, has years of know-how in AI system design and their technical delivery under his belt, says Valtonen, who was the team leader and coordinated its work.
Valtonen has broad insight into AI research, which was the subject of his doctoral dissertation.
Ideas distilled into winning solution over course of the contest
The winning solution was the result of intensive innovation, solution refinement, and mentoring.
– In the end, three interwoven things put us on a path to winning: seeing the key customer need, an innovative technical implementation, and clear presentation of the solution, Valtonen says.
The team asked Coherent preliminary questions to find the correct direction, which enabled the creation of a spot-on solution to customer’s needs.
– We also got to use our Regatta® platform, which enables a faster, more cost-efficient delivery, Valtonen says.
Defining the solution architecture and implementation and creating a Proof of Concept proposal demanded a lot of hard work from the Remion team, sometimes even into the wee hours.
– Turning the concept into a visually appealing form is also an important stage. A good solution is not enough: you have to be able to communicate the solution and its benefits well, Valtonen says.
New to the contest was a two-minute video which each team used to showcase its solution.
Remion solutions tried and tested long-term
One of the reasons the contest jury chose Remion’s solution to the Coherent smart laser welding system was that Remion’s analytics and AI know-how and solutions have been tried and tested in the long term. This makes it fast and easy for the company to start delivering a holistic solution.
Remion has a wealth of experience in developing a range of analytics solutions for industry. These include machinery fault and repair prediction, analysis of warnings and vibrations, and efficiency boosts in production.
Remion is an experienced industrial partner when it comes to analytics and AI solutions.
– We have forecast when machines need to be serviced based on use and identified machines and data collection units that were behaving abnormally. We also have strong skills in statistical analysis of big data, as well as data structuring and consolidation. For example, we can get a high-level view of a situation by combining data coming from different machines, Valtonen says.
Tech skills are in demand
Remion needs more analysts for its new tech development projects. It is looking to hire in programming, data processing and AI solution development.
