Remote Monitoring Helps Maximize Wind Turbine Performance

Real-Time Data for Measuring Energy Production Performance

Wind Controller, a provider of technical expert services for the wind power industry, aims to maximize energy production in wind farms throughout their entire lifecycle.
Energy production is supported by a remote monitoring service used by Wind Controller for wind turbines, wind farm substations, and solar power plants. Through this remote monitoring service, our 24/7 control room continuously monitors renewable energy production in real time.
With the right performance indicators, production managers and maintenance operators gain valuable insights into turbine performance and operational reliability development. Information about alarms and fault situations helps identify the root causes of failures more quickly than before. Comparing different turbines also provides insights into reasons behind production differences.

The Regatta remote monitoring system was easy to implement and could be customized to meet our needs. Thanks to the energy production performance indicators and the portal’s adaptable views, we are able to provide our customers with real-time information to optimize energy production

The Need for a New, Modern Remote Monitoring System

“We wanted to modernize our remote monitoring and were looking for a partner who could provide a customizable platform and new ideas for developing remote monitoring. Remion was able to offer us the modern Regatta service, which could be cost-effectively tailored to our needs — without having to build the entire system from scratch,” says Kari Koivikko, CEO of Wind Controller.

Together with Wind Controller, Remion developed performance indicators to measure turbine operational efficiency and availability. These indicators provide insights into how much power a turbine produces at different wind speeds and how much capacity the turbine has been ready to produce.

In addition, the Regatta service was expanded to include a maintenance logbook function and fault reporting features, including measurements of failure probability and failure timing.

Regatta Expands Easily to New Processes

Production and fault data from turbines are centrally stored in a cloud service, where the information is further processed and distributed through customized views for maintenance operators and plant owners.

“We have been satisfied with the system. Thanks to the customizable views, we can continuously develop the Regatta Portal to meet the needs of our different customer user groups,” says Kari Koivikko.

Wind Controller plans to further leverage Regatta’s modularity and expand the system’s use to additional processes. The next step is to implement the system for reporting wind turbine inspections.

“Our work processes will become significantly faster when inspectors can create reports directly in the system from the field, making them immediately available,” Koivikko explains.
